Camino and Firefox Browser Hacks

I’ve been finding a few browser tricks and hacks(?) for the Firefox and Camino browsers lately. I have found that Camino has the most usable hacks, although it may be that Firefox has more but I can’t find them. BTW, I have tested these tricks on Firefox 2.5 and Camino 1.0.3 for Mac. I expect most of these tricks will work on Windows computers.

Anyway, the hacks for Camino are listed below.

  • Holding down the Apple and option key will change the mouse pointer into a hand and allow you to scroll the page around as if it was a pdf.
  • Typing about:about into the address field will bring you to a list of other about addresses, including ones for looking inside your cache, viewing the Mozilla logo (not what you think), changing just about any browser setting that you could think of (hundreds more than the preferences), viewing the plugins installed and looking at a verse from the Book of Mozilla (fictional I think).
  • Option-clicking on a link will bring up a save dialog, however the dialog box is missing the options to hide the extension and choose the save format. If you do select OK it will save the page that the link pointed to but without any images or CSS files. Does anyone know what this hack is for?
  • Shift-clicking on a link will stop that link from loading. I think the only use for this would be to find out what the :active state is for a particular link.

Two more hacks for Firefox only are listed below.

  • Option-clicking on a link will automatically save that page without bringing up a save dialog.
  • Only some of the Camino about commands will work in the Firefox browser. These include about:buildconfig, about:cache, about:config, about:credits (takes you to a mozilla page on the net), about:license, about:mozilla and about:plugins.

If you find know or find any more hacks for either Camino or Firefox please let me know and I’ll include them here along with your name and website. I would also appreciate feedback from Windows users. Have fun!

Changes to Jylanization

You might notice Jylanization has had a bit of a redesign. Immediately visible is the wider design and new header image, but if you look carefully you can see that I’ve also changed my tagline from “Everything you’d want to know about Jylan Wynne” to “Blogging by a 14 year old living in Yeppoon, QLD, Australia.” I felt that these changes enhanced the usability and attraction of Jylanization. What do you reckon?

Climbing Mt Hedlow

At the beginning of this winter we said that we would climb a nearby (within 10km) mountain called Mt Hedlow, which is approximately 230m high. Because of snake danger, climbing mountains like Mt Hedlow in Summer or Spring is not recommended.

Anyway, we drove up as close as we could to the mountain and started to walk. I had put on my SES trousers, shirt and boots to protect myself from snakes and branches. After about half an hour of walking we reached the base of the mountain and started climbing. Below are a few photos of Lake Mary (a small lake near Mt Hedlow which has shrunk a lot) and Mt Hedlow itself. The mountain you can see in the background of Lake Mary is not Hedlow, which is actually to the left of the lake.

I sighted the first snake just as I was about to step on it. It was fairly short and slim, and I think it was a light brown colour. It slithered away into some rocks and plants so we just walked around it. Some time after this, I spotted a plant whose leaves had intricate patterns on them. I liked the photo so much I put it on my photoblog. A bit further on we stopped for a while and I took the opportunity to snap some photos of the view which can be seen below.

About 5 or so minutes later we were able to see up to the north, including Lake Mary.

Finally we (my mum and I, my sisters stopped before the top) reached the top of Mt Hedlow after a long climb that took about 50 minutes. I took a few photos to prove this, as you can see below. The round piece of metal in one of the photos is a survey marker.

After reaching the top and adding a stone to rock pile (each time someone climbs a mountain they add a rock to the pile to show that they’ve been there), we started our descent to the bottom. On the way we saw another snake, this time a yellow belly. See below for the picture. Anyway, we arrived at the car very feeling very thirsty and ended up coming home after dark. All in all, it was a great way to spend the afternoon!

I won the Photo Friday Oddity theme!

I am so excited because I’ve just discovered that a picture on my photoblog called Water Cocoon has been voted top of the list for the Photo Friday oddity theme. If you don’t believe me, head over to the Photo Friday archive for the Oddity winners.

For those who don’t know anything about Photo Friday, it is a weekly photo meme that announces a theme every week. People then enter photographs that they have taken. Over the weekend that the next weeks theme has been announced, people vote for who they think should win for last weeks theme. And I won. Below is the photo that won it.

Thanks everyone for voting for me :)

Central Queensland Gem Show

As my family and I were driving through Yeppoon CBD on our way to a picnic at Farnborough beach, we saw that the CQ Gem Show was open. Everyone wanted to go, so we stopped and went inside for a look. I had a great time photographing heaps of gems and precious stones. Below are a few of the photos that I took. You can also see some more photos of the gem show at my photoblog.
